Big-time boxers

And for those who have an interest in boxing, the Gladiator Boxing team recently competed in the Silver Gloves state tournament in Newark, and according to coach Shawn Darling the team "did great!"

Among those who won were 9-year-old 55-pounder Scotty Crawford, who captured his third amateur tournament title, while Katey Russo won the 9-year-old, 65-pound division title. Nick Valliere also won the 13-year-old, 106-pound division, and Anthony Parisi won the 13-year-old, 112-pound division.

Connor Bott scored a victory in the final to win the 15-year-old, 106-pound division crown, while Rocco Salimbene won the 15-year-old, 119-pound open division, and and Bobby "The Brooklyn Bull" McCarthy won the 15-year-old super heavyweight open division with a 30-second knockout in the first round, making him a six-time amateur champion.

Out of 48 competitors, McCarthy was voted Best Boxer of the tournament.

Since Salimbene and McCarthy won the open divisions, they will move on to the Silver Gloves Regional Tournament in Oneonta, N.Y., which is scheduled for Jan. 10.

Congratulations to all of Gladiator's winners, and especially Salimbene and McCarthy for moving onto to regional competition.
