Newspapers on 10/25/06 STAFF REPORT Gladiator Boxing Gym in Forked River will
host its first sanctioned amateur boxing competition this
Saturday with an 11-bout card on the slate. The Gladiator Amateur Boxing
Championships begin at 6:30 p.m. and will feature a whole
batch of young locals kicking off amateur careers, many of
which will be pitted against boxers from outside Ocean
County. Forked River's Rob Walder, a 17-year-old
who last winter played for the Lacey High School boys
basketball team, will compete in a 201-pound bout against
Long Branch 's Shawn Martin, while former Lacey swimmer Mike
Tito, 19, will take on Bayville's Liam Kerrigan in a
165-pound contest. Toms River's Mike Spicer, 16, will take
on Paterson's Luis Hernandez in a 130-pound contest, while
Forked River's Mike Smith (1-1), a 13-year-old who last year
won a New Jersey Silver Gloves title as well as a New Jersey
Junior Olympic title this year, will face Newark's Dave
Ramos in a 110-pound clash. Manahawkin 9-year-old Joey Bockin will
meet John Pearsall of Brooklyn , N.Y. , in a 105-pound
matchup, while 14-year-old Forked River boxer Rob Smith
takes on 13-year-old Lanoka Harbor boxer Mike Giovani in a
115-pound bout. Five other bouts are scheduled to take
place at the Gladiator gym, which is located at 699
