REPORT The Gladiator Boxing Gym boxers have been
faring well of late. And such was the case late last month,
when Lacey's Deroy Beaton defeated Mumin Massey of Newark in
the quarterfinals of the annual Golden Gloves
tournament. Beaton then followed that up with a win
over Dean Spadavecchia of Vernon during the semifinals on
March 28 to move on to the final, which is scheduled for
tomorrow night, April 18, in Elizabeth . On March 22, Gladiator Boxing Gym hosted
a USA Boxing-sanctioned Junior Olympic card, and several
Gladiator boxers did well. Team Gladiator member Rob Smith of Forked
River defeated his opponent, Alex Masumou of the Real Boxing
Club from Mananlapan, in the 16-year-old, 125-pound
division, while teammate Dan Murray of Barnegat defeated his
opponent, Anthony Diaz of the North Bergen PAL, in the
16-year-old, 152-pound division. The show was a great success in front of
a sold-out, standing-room-only crowd. Smith and Murray will
be joined by teammates Joe Bockin, Anthony Sodano, Scott
Crawford, Frank Serritella, Mike Fuller, Rocco Salimbene,
Dave and Ray Dibenedetto, and Robert McCarthy for the
upcoming state championship tournament May 3 in Paterson
. Gladiator Gym will host its next amateur
card on Saturday, May 31, starting at 6 p.m.
