When you walk into Lexington Legends
Boxing Gym you experience sensory overload. All the sights,
sounds, and smells that make boxing gyms part of lore are on
full display at Lexington Legends. As you walk down the hall
to the gym you hear the muffled sounds of bass coming from
the stereo. At the end of the hall as you make your way to
the gym, the bass fades in your mind and you begin to hear
the constant thud of the heavy bag. The smells of sweat,
spit and blood engulf you as you pull up a stool. In the
ring you see a young K.C. bouncing around arousing memories
of a young Sugar Ray Lenoard. Spanning around the gym you
notice Tim snapping a head back with a jab that reminds you
of Lenox Lewis. Finally your eyes settle on the heavy bag
where you witness body punches that make your ribs hurt.
This attack brings thoughts of Ricky Hatton to mind. When
the boxer turns around you are confronted by stunningly
lethal beauty 2008 Olympic hopeful Abby Bellamy. In the
middle of all these boxers you see the gym's trainer, Sarg.
When working with the boxer's he is like a composer
conducting a symphony. Almost continually without stop he
spouts out instructions, "keep your eblow from flaring out
when throw the jab, you have to double the jab to get inside
and keep hands up." As training comes to an end you are
again reminded why boxing is special. Oral history which use
to be such an intergal part of society continues to
disappear in many other sports as we turn to 24 hour cable
analyst for our stories. Yet as the doors to the gym close
you hear the playful banter between Sarg and his boxers as
he imparts stories about boxing greats from Sugar Ray
Robinson to Roy Jones Jr. As you look at the exterior of the
gym you can close your eyes and see past greats in your
mind. After your first time there, any true boxing fan,
enthusiats or competitor can't stop coming.
