In 1990, he won the 147lb. Open Class of the New Jersey State Golden Gloves championship. He lost by split decision in the National Golden Gloves sem-ifinals. He also won the 147-pound Open Class 1990 New Jersey State Diamond Glove championship.
In 1991, Maciunski won New Jersey and Northeast Regional Amateur Boxing Federation titles.Maciunski's professional ring resume includes wins over former world champions Meldrick Taylor and Buddy McGirt
Because of his proficiency at chess Darren was dubbed "Checkmate'
