in Fifteen Fierce Rounds with Louis
DIFFERENCE
Farr Fought With Cut
and Bleeding Eyes
"THE CLEVERER AND MORE
RESOURCEFUL'- Says Ben Bennison
Joe Louis, the American negro, is still the world
heavyweight boxing AFTER THE FIGHT Louis said:
champion. He was given the verdict on points over Tommy
Farr,
the Welsh champion of Britain, in New York, last night. The
fight went the
"full distance," fifteen rounds.
"Tommy Farr fooled me. He is one game, tough fellow,
and I doff my
crown to him." (See LOUIS'S
OWN STORY)
Farr said:
"I'm not a squealer. What I want to say most is that
Louis is the
best and cleanest fighter I have ever met."
Ben Bennison, the "Evening Standard" boxing
correspondent, cables from
the ringside:
"I do not dispute the correctness of the decision...
There was only a
fractional difference in favor of Louis.
"For twelve of the fifteen rounds Farr fought with two
cut and bleeding
eyes. But for this, Farr might of won, if only because of
his undying courage.
"I say without hesitation that Farr proved himself a
better, cleverer and
more resourceful boxer," concludes Ben Bennison.
After the verdict had been given, the ringside crowd
showed dissension
by booing, fully 75 per cent of the spectators being of
opinion that Farr
had done more than enough to be returned the winner.
After the fight, the doctor examining Farr's hands
thought a finger was
broken.
Broadribb, Farr's manager, said that the
decision was "quite fair". I gave
Tommy five or six rounds, and if he hadn't had his eyes
bunged up in the
early rounds he would have done much better."
the Money
The fight crowd was 36,903, the
official paid attendance being 33,469
and the receipts approximately
£53,150, exclusive of £11,000 for film
and Broadcast rights. The net
receipts were about £44,092, of which
Louis receives £22,037 and Farr
£12,000.
His Hands
Louis in the fight, bruised a bone
in his right hand. His left hand was
also swollen. Both hands were
damaged by hitting the top of Farr's
head.
The right hand may have to be put
into a plaster cast for at least a
month.
The proposed fight between Louis
and Max Schmeling on October 12
has been definitely put off until June.
If Louis does any more boxing this
season it will not be until the indoor
season starts late in the year.
