REFEREE DID
NOT SEE BLOW
Schmeling Turned Back on
Him, Obstructing View,
Crowley Declares

By United Press
_ NEW YORK - Referee Jim Crow-
ley did not see the blow on which
he awarded Max Schmeling the
world heavyweight championship,
but he did the only thing he could
"under the circumstances."
_That, Crowley explained today,
was to consult the two judges. Judge
Charles Mathison was not in a po-
sition to see the blow, he said. Judge
Harold Barnes, however, said he was
positive it had been a foul.
_ On the word of the latter, the de-
cision - and the title - was given to
Schmeling.
_ Crowley was watching the fight-
ers intently when the foul blow was
struck, but Schmeling turned his
back upon the referee just as it
landed, obstructing the official's
view.
