Boxing Advice And Tips
Austin "The Freight Train" Higgins
Beginner Boxing Tips
_ I started boxing in the
spring of 2001 and I learned all I knew from fighting my
friends, books, and boxing matches I have seen. I have some
workout tips and fight tips. The workout tips are:
_ When working out work the
shoulders, abs, back, and forearms. Working the upper arms
will NOT make you punch better. A good thing to do is jump
rope, on one foot then on both then on the other foot. It
makes you used to balancing lightly with a heavy weight.
Also, jogging will help to get you in to shape but also do
sprints. 20, 40, 50 yard sprints whatever is comfortable, 40
works nicely for me. This will help with training for many
spurts of energy you use in a match. On a heavy bag go 15, 3
minute rounds with a one minute rest. If you only fight 3-5
rounds then your set.
_ You should also do
concentration exercises. Put a very loud speaker by your ear
and throw a ball up against the wall and catch it while
thinking only about boxing. Have someone drop a medicine
ball on your stomach while listening to loud music trying to
concentrate on boxing.
Fight Tips:
_ Keep your shoulders and neck
loose during fights. Make sure to keep your weight on the
balls of your feet. You can move easier this way. Bend your
knees a little but do not crouch. Don't dance around in the
ring, this is known as "happy feet" it will just tire you
out and you lose balance easier if your hoppin' around all
over the place. Always keep your guard up, after you punch
someone, snap back as fast as you have punched. If you have
